Cembra, Lago Santo, Piz Agole
Cembra, Lago Santo Piz delle Agole PDF

Departure point: parking is at the entrance of the village coming from Segonzano-Faver. Departure is from the Cembra Cantina Sociale (a public wine cellar), where one can buy local wine. The main town of the valley with the same name Cembra extends to the vast plain at 665 m above sea level. The town has a population of ,1700 and boasts a very rich history. Reference was made to it by Paolo Diacono, who reminds us how it was destroyed by the Franks in 590. It hosts a very well known cantina sociale (public cellar) which produces quality white wines (Muller- Thurgau); the village is divided in two parts: towards the mountain side there is the historic center and extended across the plains, there is the new part of the village. History and art: Pieve dell'Assunta, a Gothic style building dating back to the year 942, originally built by “Mastro Grigo” and subsequently renovated. Inside: 15th century frescoes, paintings by T. Polacco, locally produced sculptures of the 8th century. The church of Saint Peter is one of the major art monuments of the Avisio Valley.
A Gothic building once called S.Pietro in Bosco (St. Peter in the woods), because it used to be adjacent to a chestnut orchard, is now in the middle of the town center. Inside: frescoes of the 15th century in Altotesina style to be found on top of the entrance : the Final Judgement by V. Rovisi. For visits please ask for information at the parish church or the city hall.
The fountains, facades, archways and other precious buildings in the streets of the historic center are very interesting. Not far from the Cantina Sociale, towards the valley, one can see the church of Saint Rocco, with a beautiful bell tower on its side, home to a big bell forged in Cembra in 1632 and weighing 15 quintals. The road to the 17th century “torretta Maffei” begins on the left of the church. Near Cembra at the back of “Caslir” there is a “situla”, which is a small reto-etruscan container, from the second iron age discovered in 1838. This was used for wine offering to the Gods and is now preserved in the Buoconsiglio di Trento museum. On the left of the Assunta church, the road which leads to Lago Santo begins, which is about 5 km away from the main road 612. The lake of glacial origin is 210 m long, 180 m large and 15 m deep and is rich in water fauna (trout, scardole, and carp). A beautiful view of the Trentino Alps. An interesting and easy walk takes you to the “Piz dele Algole” or “Monte Speggio”. Going up by car from Cembra towards Lago Santo you go past the porphyry quarries to reach then the crossroads to the SAT della Maderlina mountain lodge. You can park the car and take the forest road which in 10 minutes takes you to the mountain lodge. From here, you can proceed along path no. 417 which in 40 minutes takes you to the peak of Mount Speggia where itinerary 6 guides you to the most panoramic point.
